Definition & Description of Asså

“Asså” is one of the most common filler words in spoken Swedish, very similar to how English speakers use “like” or “you know.” It doesn’t add much meaning on its own but helps to give speakers time to think, soften a statement, or add emphasis.

It’s a shortened form of the word alltså (meaning “so,” “therefore,” or “that is”), but in everyday conversations, it has lost its formal meaning and is used casually. Swedish teens and young adults, in particular, use asså all the time when telling stories, reacting to something surprising, or starting a sentence.

Even though it’s technically meaningless, it reflects a very natural part of how Swedes actually talk. While it’s fine in informal conversations, you wouldn’t normally see it in writing or hear it in professional settings.
